Fishing Report: July 1 - July 14

Some small Fluke have been reported near the 6, 4, and 2 buoys at the mouth of the Shrewsbury river leading into Sandy Hook Bay. The larger fish are closer to the ammo pier and the Coast Guard station. The bay is still loaded with bunker, but there aren't any blues chasing them. Weather on Saturday is good for fishing, as long as you bring the rain gear. Sunday brings a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, but if you keep an eye on the skies you won't get stuck out there.

Fishing Report: June 9 - June 25

The past two weeks have been pretty good for fluke. These two fluke were caught on killies by the coast guard station, just North of the last set of pound nets. They've also been doing alright by the ammo pier; just don't get too close.

The wind coming out of the Northwest today will make the bay very rough on the outgoing tide. Once the tide changes, you'll probably find your drift to be too fast for fishing.

Tomorrow, the wind will be working again, so fishing the river would be your best bet in one of the small boats. The larger boats can handle the chop of the bay better, and the spray might be refreshing in the 80 degree heat they're calling for.

I've heard less news about the bluefish and stripers, but the bay is LOADED with bunker. Just wait until late afternoon and listen for the slaps out in the bay. Seriously, they're everywhere.

Fishing Report: June 1-June 9

Anglers,

The river is loaded with bunker and where there are bunker, there are blues. The Oceanic bridge has still been a good spot for Fluke, but they are moving towards the bay. The ammo pier is also a great spot; one rental from 6-8 maxed out on Fluke and ran into a few schools of blues.

Overall, if you can make it out and get back to the dock before the afternoon showers hit, you should have a great day on the water.

Fishing Report: May 21-31

The fluke are beginning to move from the river to the bay. Fewer fish are being reported up the Navesink River, and more are being caught in the Shrewsbury north of the Highlands bridge.

Bunkers have been seen moving up river again, and there should be some blues and maybe a bass or two underneath. You can also find blues in the bay; just look for the birds striking the water. If you'll be fishing for bass, live-lining bunker works pretty well, and if you can get your hands on a slow moving bunker you might have better luck.

Fishing Report: May14 through May 20

Hello Anglers!

The fishing during the 2012 Summer Flounder or Fluke is still going strong. The fluke are both up the river and in the bay. If it's a windy day, a trip up the Navesink might be your best bet, unless the wind is howling from the East or the West. Bluefish have been reported in the Sandy Hook Bay.

Fishing Report 5-6 through 5/12

Hello Anglers!

The 2012 Fluke season is off to a fun start in Sandy Hook Bay. At least one of the old hot spots is working out so far, and that's by Officer's Row near the tip of the hook. You'll want to drift in the area of the pound nets, but make sure you keep your distance from them. Catching an incoming tide seems to be your best bet. Squid and spearing work well, but so do artificial baits like Gulp. The current does run hard, so using a 3 or 4 ounce sinker would be beneficial.

Also, the fishing regulations have changed slightly from last year. You may now only keep 5 fish, but they can be 17.5 inches.

Good luck out there!
